DAYS UNTIL OPENING CEREMONY: 55.
OLYMPIC UPDATE: The Salt Lake Organizing Committee has fired its 2002 Olympic Village manager a little more than a month before athletes will start showing up in Salt Lake. Dan Lang was hired by SLOC a year ago to help set up the athletes village. SLOC won't say why it fired Lang, a former Los Angeles police officer who also helped with security at the Olympic Village in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
MARCH TO THE MEDALS: U.S. women's bobsledders Jen Racine and Jen Davidson are splitsville. Racine, a bobsled driver, tossed her longtime brakeman Davidson out of the sled Thursday and is replacing her with Gea Johnson. Racine, of Waterford, Mich., and Davidson, of Layton, Utah, have been World Cup champions for the past two seasons.
CARRYING THE TORCH: The Olympic flame begins Saturday, its 12th day in the United States, in Memphis, Tenn. It visits Jackson and Dickson before ending the day in Nashville.
