Regarding Kristen Lazar's Dec. 6 letter, "Skate park needed for Augusta area," we agree about the benefits of such a facility Ms. Lazar mentioned in her letter and are seeing these benefits first hand at the Augusta Skatepark on Damascus Road.
The park, funded through a state of Georgia grant and by local contributions of cash and materials, was constructed by Augusta Recreation and Parks Department with assistance from local skaters.
Mayor Bob Young and the Augusta Commission unanimously approved the project and were very supportive of the new site, which opened last April.
The commission also approved an agreement with the Augusta Rugby Club to staff and operate the park.
This agreement provides the essential daily supervision (open six days a week) of the activities at the park and has added to the safety and security of skaters using the facility.
Over the past month, several new ramps have been added through proceeds collected at the park and with increased support for the park by the local community, more improvements will follow.
We encourage all skating enthusiasts of any age to come out and enjoy the park.
