Stallions keep staff intact

Augusta Stallions general manager Darrell Harbin is happy to keep his team's coaching staff intact.

The Stallions recently re-signed head coach Mike Hold and defensive coordinator Bubba Diggs for the 2002 season.

"It's something that's going to move this organization forward going into the 2002 season," Harbin said. "To be able to keep two coaches of that caliber for another season bodes well for the organization."

The move contrasts last off-season for the Stallions. After Augusta's first year on the field, head coach Mike Neu left and the front office was reorganized.

"When you lose coaches every year, it's tough to rebound," Harbin said. "It just creates a better working relationship between everyone."

NEW SCHEDULE: Some changes in store for the 2002 season begins with the schedule. Harbin said the schedule will be released next week and he hopes to have four Friday home games and four Saturday home games. He also wants to have the gametime pushed back to 7:40 p.m.

Thus far, the team has sold 1,500 season tickets. Harbin believes the team's new schedule will help that figure.

"That's way above what it was last year," he said. "Once our schedule comes out, we really expect our ticket sales to skyrocket."

SIGNINGS: The Stallions have signed six players for the upcoming season. The list includes: defensive backs Mo Thompson and Lavar Rainey; quarterback Glen Gauntt; lineman David Greer; wide receiver Undre Williams and fullback/linebacker Sherrod Davis.

Williams played professional football with the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions while Gauntt was a backup for the Stallions last season. He played in 11 games, threw nine touchdowns and completed 47 percent of his passes.

POSSIBLE DEPARTURES: Quarterback Jermaine Alfred and offensive specialist Tim Dumas have tryouts with the Arena Football League's Dallas Desperados. The team is owned by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

TRYOUT: The Stallions are holding a tryout camp on Jan. 12 at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, S.C. There will be a $40 registration fee which includes a T-shirt. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the tryout following at 11 a.m. For more information, call the Stallions at 738-9539.
