Man killed in car-truck collision

A 79-year-old Grovetown man was killed this afternoon after his car was struck by a dump truck in Columbia County.

The accident happened at the intersection of Columbia and Louisville roads in Appling about 1:30 p.m. Police had not released the man's named pending notification of next-of-kin.

Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said the man's 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier ran the stop sign on Louisville Road and was broadsided by the dump truck driven by Mark Chalker, 36, of Lincolnton, Ga. The truck is owned by Bobby Tucker Hauling of Gibson, Ga.

The impact spun the red compact car several times, leaving it about 80 feet away from the impact point.

Columbia Road is heavily traveled by large vehicles because of construction in the numerous subdivisions and the presence of two rock quarries along the thoroughfare.

The fatality was Columbia County's ninth of the year.
