Police say a Chatham County man triggered Monday's head-on collision that killed two Hephzibah drivers.
Brenda Doyle, 38, of Keysville Road, and Winston Anthony Jennings, 60, of Old Mims Road died after the 10:19 a.m. crash on Peach Orchard Road near Boykin Road, Richmond County sheriff's Maj. Larry Vinson said.
Witnesses told deputies that Clinton Boyd Hendley, 72, was driving northbound in a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis when his vehicle drifted into another lane. It bumped Ms. Doyle's 1988 Ford pickup, causing the truck to travel into the southbound lane.
Ms. Doyle was killed instantly in a head-on collision with Mr. Jennings' 1983 GMC Jimmy, Maj. Vinson said. Mr. Jennings was rushed to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he later died.
Mr. Hendley of Pooler, Ga., was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and failure to maintain his lane. He was booked into the Richmond County jail and later released after posting bond on the misdemeanor charges.
"He said he didn't remember drifting over," Maj. Vinson said.
Mr. Hendley had come to Augusta for a dental appointment, Maj. Vinson said.
The wreck slowed traffic for several hours with only one lane open in both directions, the major said.
