MARTINEZ, Ga. - Master Sergeant Richard Bruce Stowell, U.S. Army Retired, age 79, of Martinez passed away, Thursday, November 29, 2001, at Doctors Hospital. A native of Houghtonville, Vt., he had resided in Augusta since 1962. MSgt. Stowell retired in April 1971 from Ft. Gordon after 28 years in the U.S. Army, after which time he joined the staff at MCG where he later retired as Assistant Director of Housekeeping. He was a member of the Masonic Order, the American Legion, the VFW, Forrest Hills Lions and Golf Club and Pointe South Golf Club. He had worked as a volunteer for 26 years at the Augusta Nationals Masters Golf Tournament. He was a veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was a member of the Third Congregational Church, Alstead, N.H. and had attended Abilene Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Mack Stowell who passed away in 1998. He is survived by a daughter, Diane Simmons and her husband, Leonard, Martinez; one brother, James Stowell, Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren, Leonard A. Simmons, Melissa E. Simmons; and special friends, Doc and Jody Scott. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, December 3, 2001, from the chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez with Military Chaplain Gerry Kerr officiating.
