Bank robbed in Martinez

The First Union Bank branch on Washington Road in Martinez was robbed just before 3 p.m. today.

Witnesses described the alleged robber as a 6-foot-1, 180-lbs. black man wearing a blue-jean shirt, a green hat and plastic-framed glasses. He was seen exiting the back of the bank with a bag of money.

According to a dispatcher, a weapon was not used.

Witnesses said they saw the man drop the stolen bag of money seconds after he exited the bank when a dye pack exploded on him. A worker in a nearby office and a bank customer chased the man on foot, but he was able to elude them in a truck.

Investigators were on the scene quickly and had roped off the area around the abandoned money, which included several $20 and $100 bills. Police are now searching for the suspect and the vehicle he escaped in - a 1970's model black and red Ford truck.
