James Bennett, M.D.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Dr. James W. Bennett of Augusta, 78, beloved husband of the late Florence Dennis Bennett, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, at University Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. John United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry L. Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Dr. Bennett is survived by his son, Mr. James W. Bennett Jr. and his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frances Thompson Bennett of Augusta; and three grandchildren, Caroline Griffis Bennett, James William Bennett III and Robert Thompson Bennett. If so desired, memorial contributions may be given to the James W. Bennett Endowment Fund, University Health Care Foundation at University Hospital or the Shelter for Abused Children, P.O. Box 12036, Augusta, GA. 30904. A native of LaGrange, Dr. Bennett graduated Emory University and obtained his M.D. degree in 1946 from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla. and served his country in Japan in the U. S. Army Medical Corp. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Georgia and at Babies Hospital of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He served on the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia becoming Professor of Pediatrics in 1972. Dr. Bennett was an outstanding teacher and pediatrician who cared for three generations of children in Augusta. He was Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at University Hospital. He was a member of the Richmond County Medical Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Southern Perinatal Society. He served on various professional and civic boards and committees throughout his career. He received many awards and honors including the Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Augusta, Volunteer of the Year by Georgia Easter Seal Society, Friends of Children Award presented by Augusta Council for Children and Youth, the Angel Award presented by Sacred Heart Cultural Center and the Girl Scout Council, the Miracle Maker Award, Pediatrician of the Year presented by the Georgia Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics (corecipient with A. Joseph Green, M.D.), June 18, 1994, membership into Alpha Omega Alpha awarded by Medical College of Georgia. In 1995 Medical College of Georgia established The Bennett-Green Lectureship in honor of his tremendous educational contributions. He also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award presented by the Alumni Association of the School of Medicine of the Medical College of Georgia, May 1997, Civic Endeavor Award presented by Richmond County Medical Society 2001 and was awarded the First Honorary President of Childrens Medical Center Executive Committee 2000. Dr. Bennett was active in cultural and charitable organizations in Augusta. He was a life long member of the Methodist Church and served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and the Henry Bible Class at St. John United Methodist Church. The pallbearers will be Thomas M. Blanchard, Dr. Allen J. Dennis, Dr. Brown Wimberly Dennis, Dr. William Kanto, J. Benjamin Kay III, Lansing B. Lee Jr., Dr. C. Stephen Mulherin, Dr. J. Beryl Tanenbaum and William F. Toole.
