Evans High School loses classification appeal

The Georgia High School Association executive committee, meeting in Forsyth, Ga., today, has rejected a constitutional change that would have allowed Evans High School to drop one classification.

The vote was 33-13 against Evans' request to gain relief under the constitution's isolation clause.

Evans had sought to be placed in lower classification region closer to the school, reducing excessive travel and expenses to compete in athletics.

Following state reclassification before the 2000-01 school year, Evans was placed in Class AAAA, where all of the schools, except Evans, were from suburban south Atlanta.

With the executive committee's turning down Evans' appeal, the school is expected to be transferred from Region 4-AAAAA to Region 7-AAAAA under proposed GHSA realignment for the 2002-03 and 0003-04 seasons. Other schools expected to be in Region 7-AAAAA are located in DeKalb and Fulton counties.
