One month after the city ended its campaign to raise $1 million for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, donations have continued to trickle in, officials with the CSRA Community Foundation report.
To date, the effort has collected $1,085,309, nearly $68,000 of which was contributed after publicity for the fund-raiser ended.
"A few schools sent money in (Monday), and individuals have continued to send things to the mayor and our post office box," said Cindy Arrant of the CSRA foundation, the nonprofit group managing the donations. "We're continuing to deposit it."
At the end of the month, the remainder of the money will be donated to the the Twin Towers Fund and the Sept. 11 Fund, which is overseen by the United Way and the New York City Trust. The initial donation from the Augusta area totaled $1,017,356: 75 percent of that money went to the Sept. 11 Fund, and the rest was donated to the Twin Towers Fund.
Of the contributions, many of which were delivered by personal check, only two were returned for insufficient funds, both of which were written for less than $10, Ms. Arrant said.
"It is absolutely amazing," she said.
