Josey grad lauds ex-band director

It was a sad day for me when I read that Col. Charles Smith, the band director at T.W. Josey High School, was resigning due to allegations of sexual misconduct.

I am a former band member and Josey High School graduate. I don't know the student who initiated those allegations, but I can tell you this: This man has gone way beyond what most teachers do for their students. I have seen him give band members money to eat when we have gone on band trips. I have seen him stay up all hours of the night to make sure that we were prepared for a performance.

He is an excellent teacher, a hard worker and a perfectionist. He is a man of good character and an excellent role model. A couple of years ago, he was given the Teacher of the Year Award which was long overdue.

The T.W. Josey Band meant a lot to many people. They'll tell you, the only reason they came to a Josey football game was to see the band. I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Col. Smith. The sonic boom of the South will never be the same without him.
