The ninth annual CSRA Classic kicks off tonight with a formal banquet at the Radisson Riverfront Hotel Augusta at 7:30.
NFL Hall-of-Famer Paul Warfield, a wide receiver for Cleveland and Miami, will be the guest speaker. Tickets are $60.
Following a golf tournament at The Club at Jones Creek on Friday, the CSRA Classic football game will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lumpkin Road Stadium. The matchup will feature Morris Brown and Savannah State.
"We're looking for a good, close, hard-fought game between two traditional rivals," said Ellis Albright, executive director of the CSRA Classic. "What'll really be good is the battle of the bands."
The bands will play at halftime of the game between the two 1-4 teams. Albright expects between 12,000 to 14,000 fans. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the gate.
Three local players are on the teams. Lamon Coleman (Aquinas) and Kelvin Wright (Laney) play for Morris Brown and Jermaine Brooks (Josey) is the quarterback for Savannah State.
Brooks is the offensive star for the Tigers. He's completed 53 percent of his passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns. He's also the team's second-leading rusher with 213 yards.
Morris Brown's Kewan Dewberry poses a serious threat through the air. Dewberry also has completed 53 percent passing for 655 yards and four touchdowns.
Morris Brown lost its first four games before defeating Alabama A&M 16-13 last week.
Savannah State rebounded from a 69-6 drubbing by Georgia Southern to defeat South Carolina State 14-9. Since then the Tigers have dropped three straight.
