Sitting in the gym at Crawford Avenue Baptist Church with other members of the Faithful Ones, Deona Anderson watched the television as the twin towers of the World Trade Center crumbled in the wake of the terrorists attacks.
She said the events reminded her of Pearl Harbor, said the Rev. Joey Thompson, the church's minister of ministries.
"She told us we needed to get back to what we were doing and turn off the TV," he said. "The attacks really bothered her.
"She was very sweet, very loving, always smiling."
Mrs. Anderson died Saturday at University Hospital.
The minister said Mrs. Anderson and her husband, Joseph McRoy Anderson, who preceded her in death, both loved the Lord.
"They both were great listeners and prayed a ton," he said.
Survivors include a son, Joseph McRoy Anderson Jr., of Harlem; three daughters, Diane A. Schlein and Debbie A. Jones, both of Augusta, and Denise A. Sherrill, Martinez; a brother, Kenneth B. Beckum, Waynesville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A native of Blythe, Mrs. Anderson was a longtime member of Crawford Avenue Baptist and its Esther Sunday School Class and the Faithful Ones. She also was a member of Senior Friends.
Memorials may be made to the Roy Anderson Scholarship Fund in care of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church, 507 Crawford Ave., Augusta, GA 30904.
