Midweek glance

What's next: The No. 13 Tigers (4-1, 2-1 ACC) play host to North Carolina (4-3, 3-1) on Saturday (noon, ESPN2).

What's new: Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden said Tuesday that he was uncertain whether starting cornerback Brian Mance, whose brother died in a car accident Saturday night, will play against the Tar Heels. Bowden said he will let Mance's family make the final decision.

Injuries: WR Kevin Youngblood (leg) and WR Tony Elliott (wrist) are out. CB Kevin Johnson (rib), WR Jackie Robinson (jaw) and WR Roscoe Crosby (knee) are questionable.

Pressing question: Will the defense improve anytime soon? The Tigers did something right last weekend by limiting N.C. State to 21 rushing yards, but the pass defense showed little progress by giving up 331 yards through the air.

Notable: QB Woody Dantzler is the only player in the nation ranked among the top 25 in both pass efficiency and rushing.

Quotable: "If I told you, I'd have to kill you." - Bowden, on how to stop Dantzler.
