Mr. William Weltch



EVANS, Ga. - Mr. J. William Weltch, 91, of Owens Road, died Sunday, October 7, 2001, at the University Hospital. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at Trinity On The Hill United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Mr. Weltch, a native Augustan, was born February 28, 1910. He attended local schools and graduated from Richmond Academy. He went on to attend Georgia Institute of Technology and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Mr. Weltch had a lifetime career in banking and retired as President of First Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1975. He was a member of Trinity On The Hill United Methodist Church. He served in many civic organizations as President of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce, the Exchange Club of Augusta, the Georgia-Carolina Council of Boy Scouts and the Georgia Savings and Loan League and the United Fund. He was a Richmond County Commissioner, a Trustee at Paine College, and served as Chairman of the Jekyll Island Authority. He received recognition and awards, such as the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award, "Citizen of the Year Award" from the Augusta Kiwanis Club, "Boss of the Year Award" from the Augusta Jaycees, the "Golden Deeds Award" presented by the Augusta Exchange Club, and the Liberty Bell Award from the Augusta Bar Association. In 1986, Mr. Weltch was presented the "Humanitarian of the Year" Award by the University Hospital Health Care Foundation. Memberships include the Exchange Club of Augusta, the Augusta Country Club and the Augusta National Golf Club. Mr. Weltch was preceded in death by his wife in 1998, the late Doris Simmons Weltch of McRae and Augusta. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. David S. (Jane) Milligan and Mrs. William M. (Frances) Force Jr.; and five grandchildren, Katie Milligan Woolington, David Milligan Jr., Alice Milligan Prettyman, Doris Force Brown and William Force III; and eight great-grandchildren.
