As a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific theater, I was appalled to read in the Sept. 22 Chronicle that 55 percent of our college-age men and women will not serve in our military if called upon.
Why are so many of our young people unpatriotic, disrespectful of our president and not willing to come to the aid of their country? Unfortunately, too many of our youth have become complacent and spoiled. Current culture gives our young men and women easy access to money and free college scholarships, and there is a lack of any responsibility.
On the other hand, we can give thanks for those with the courage and patriotism to stand up and be counted on the side of freedom and justice.
I am proud of my own grandchildren, who are able and willing to volunteer their services to our great nation in this time of need.
