Weeks best in prep football



A recap of Friday night's high school action in the Aiken-Augusta area. Highlighting the week's best:

THE RUSHERS

Burke County's Miquel Payne scored a touchdown and finished with 205 yards rushing to lead the Bears to a 27-13 victory over Jefferson County.

Augusta Christian's Joel Whinghter and Cole Raven ran wild in the Lions 55-22 thumping of Bulloch Academy. Whinghter scored four touchdowns and had 186 yards rushing, while Raven finished with two touchdowns and 167 yards rushing.

North Augusta's Reggie Merriweather scored four touchdowns, including the game-winning 6-yard touchdown to propel the Jackets to a 40-33 victory over Lakeside. The senior finished with 184 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Glascock County's Mark Walker rushed for 159 yards on 17 carries and scored the Panthers only touchdown in a 38-8 loss to Schley County.

Swainsboro's Michael Howell scored four touchdowns and finished with 148 yards to help the Tigers to a 44-3 victory over South Effingham.

Edmund Burke's Ben Joiner rushed for 141 yards on 30 carries to lead the Spartans to a 14-0 shutout of Pinewood Academy.

Thomson's Deon Palmer finished with 139 yards on 14 carries and scored on a 54-yard touchdown run to lead the Bulldogs to a 28-0 victory over Washington-Wilkes.

Washington County's Chris Irwin scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and rushed for 133 yards to help the Golden Hawks to a 22-14 victory over Johnson County. Irwin scored three touchdowns.

In a losing effort, Allendale-Fairfax's Deshon Rodell rushed for 107 yards on 23 carries in a 21-0 loss to Blackville-Hilda.

Troy Williamson ran for a touchdown and finished with 107 yards on six carries in Silver Bluffs' 42-6 victory over South Aiken.

Harlem's Dominique Brown rushed for 105 yards on seven carries to help the Bulldogs to their first victory of the year, a 41-19 pounding of Aquinas. The senior also threw a touchdown pass.

THE PASSERS

In a losing cause, Lakeside's Klay Koester passed for 215 yards on 12-of-26 and threw for a touchdown in a 40-33 loss to North Augusta.

Silver Bluff's Deangelo Bryant had two touchdown passes and finished with 187 yards in the Bulldogs victory over South Aiken.

North Augusta's Frayne Abernathy, splitting time with Andre Young at quarterback, passed for 163 yards on 8-of-11 and threw a touchdown pass in a 40-33 victory over Lakeside. Abernathy also rushed for another touchdown.

Screven County, more known for its brutal Wing-T ground attack, opened up the air raid against Appling County. Quarterback Willis McCorvey passed for 123 yards and a touchdown in the Gamecocks' victory over Class AAA sixth-ranked Appling County.

Strom Thurmond's Cliff Lowe passed for 119 yards on 9-of-19 in the Rebels' 28-14 victory over Saluda. Lowe also ran for two touchdowns.

THE RECEIVERS

Lakeside's Steven Rogers hauled in 10 passes for 181 yards, including a touchdown, as the Panthers dropped a 40-33 decision to North Augusta.

Screven County's Will Campbell caught the game's only touchdown and finished with seven catches for 118 yards in the Gamecocks' 10-6 victory over Appling County.

Silver Bluff's Troy Williamson caught three passes for 83 yards and a touchdown in the Bulldogs' 42-6 victory over South Aiken. Teammate Joe Wilson caught two passes for 82 yards.

Warren County's Demarlo Bolton caught two passes for 69 yards while teammate Jevertus Burnett caught one pass for 55 yards to propel the Screaming Devils to a 37-0 victory over Montgomery County.

Jefferson County's Sean Walker caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jermaine Lane in the Warriors' 27-13 loss to Burke County.

THE DEFENSES

Hart County held Josey to just 53 yards of total offense in a 51-0 rout.

Screven County upset No. 6 ranked Appling County and held the Pirates to 131 yards of total offense.

Blackville-Hilda's Dentroy Felder returned an interception 95 yards to help the Hawks to a 21-0 victory over Allendale-Fairfax.

Westside's David Bullard recovered a fumble and returned an interception 41 yards to help the Patriots beat Greenbrier 21-2.

Lincoln County shut out McCormick until the fourth quarter in a 21-6 victory.

Evans linebacker Jon Lee had eight solo tackles, including two tackles for losses, and five assists, in the Knights' 12-7 loss to Riverdale. Linebacker Ernest Powell had seven tackles and seven assists for Evans. Lee also carried the ball 11 times for 36 yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Thomson's Demarco McNair scored on a 90-yard kickoff return to open the game as the Bulldogs whipped Washington-Wilkes 28-0.

Swainsboro's Mitch Nobles used his blazing speed to score on a 65-yard punt return in the Tigers' 44-3 whipping of South Effingham.

Westside's Tony LeZotte returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown to help the Patriots to a 21-2 victory over Greenbrier.

Aiken's Larry Anderson blocked a field goal and returned the loose ball 68 yards for a touchdown in the Hornets 41-0 victory over Midland Valley.
