LOPSIDED WIN: Georgia Tech's lopsided victory Saturday over Navy elicited comparisons to the most one-sided college football game of all time - Tech's 222-0 shellacking of Cumberland University in 1916.
In fact, the Yellow Jackets put up most points they've scored in a half (42 in the first half) since scoring 96 in the second half against Cumberland, a tiny law school formerly located in Lebanon, Tenn.
Of course, Saturday's win carried none of the folklore of the record-setter.
As the story goes, Cumberland had trounced Tech in baseball, 22-0, using a team comprised mainly of professional players from Nashville.
According to the Tech media guide, Yellow Jackets coach John Heisman was not amused, and offered Cumberland's football team $500 to come to Atlanta to settle the score.
Cumberland only had 16 players, and three jumped ship during a stopover in Nashville during the train trip to Georgia.
