SANDERSVILLE, Ga. - Washington County broke a 14-14 tie with a safety and a 43-yard run by Chris Irwin in the fourth period to defeat Johnson County 22-14.
Irwin, who rushed for 133 yards on 18 carries, had three touchdowns for the Golden Hawks.
Washington County (2-0) relied on its running game to get past Johnson County (2-1), gaining 294 yards on 43 carries. In addition to his fourth-quarter run, Irwin had scoring runs of 40 and 6 yards.
Johnson County, limited to 90 yards rushing on 34 carries, had a 14-7 lead at halftime after Ricky Moore scored on a 3-yard run and Josh Whitley caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Maurice Taylor.
