GreenJackets reliever Dan Giese on Friday was named South Atlantic League pitcher of the week.
The 24-year-old right-hander worked nine shutout innings in two appearances, going 1-0 with 15 strikeouts and no walks.
Giese turned in the best performance of his career Wednesday at home against Savannah, allowing four hits and no walks in five scoreless innings while striking out a career-high nine batters.
With Wednesday's performance, he now has thrown 23 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Since July 1, he is 2-1 with two saves and an 0.00 ERA, allowing just 17 hits and five walks with 37 strikeouts.
Drafted in the 34th round by the Boston Red Sox in 1999, the former UC-San Diego standout has walked just seven batters in 61 2/3 innings this season. He is 6-4 with a 2.04 ERA in 38 appearances this season.
DEWEY AT THE LAKE: Red Sox great Dwight Evans, who was hired by the team as a special consultant in June, has been in town the past two nights working with the GreenJackets.
The 49-year-old Evans played 20 seasons in the major leagues - all with the Red Sox - from 1972-91. He is fourth on the club's all-time home run list with 379 behind Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice.
For Evans, this is his first trip to Augusta. He met the team in Charleston, S.C., last month.
Red Sox farm director Kent Qualls also is with the Jackets evaluating players and the field staff.
