NEWS AND NOTES

Roving instructor

Red Sox legend Dwight Evans, hired by the club recently as a special consultant, met the GreenJackets in Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday to work with several players.

The 49-year-old Evans played 20 seasons in the major leagues - all with the Red Sox - from 1972-91. He is fourth on the club's all-time home run list with 379 behind Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice.

Evans will not be returning to Augusta with the Jackets today but likely will pay them a second visit later this season.

Back at hot corner

Tony Blanco returned to third base Wednesday for the first time in more than a month in the Jackets' 8-3 victory over the RiverDogs.

The 19-year-old Dominican, considered the top foreign third-base prospect in baseball, developed bursitis in his right shoulder in late May. He flew to Boston during the SAL all-star break for an MRI, and the Red Sox prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and instructed him not to throw for several weeks.

Blanco committed an error in his first game at third since June 7, but reported no problems with his throwing. He also went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
