NEWS AND NOTES
With six starting pitchers before promotion of Seung Jun Song, the Jackets needed Matt Thompson to skip a turn in the rotation, and used the right-hander in relief Tuesday night against Asheville.
It was only his second career appearance out of the bullpen, and Thompson wasn't at all fazed by the assignment.
The 19-year-old Thompson worked four perfect innings in relief of starter Mauricio Lara; the two combined to shut out the Tourists 2-0.
"I treated it like a regular start, and I warmed up well and felt really good out there," Thompson said. "I didn't mind it (relief) at all."
With Song, the Jackets ace and SAL All-Star Game starter, promoted to high Class A Sarasota on Tuesday, the Jackets are back to a regular five-man rotation.
Thompson will start Sunday on his usual four days of rest, while Lara will get an extra day of rest and pitch Monday at Kannapolis.
