Officers see rash of crimes

AIKEN - Two armed robberies, a burglary, a slaying, a shooting and a stabbing kept Aiken County Sheriff's deputies busy during the weekend.

The rash of crimes began at 10:35 a.m. Friday, when three masked men driving a stolen car pulled up in front of Todd's Shop and Go in Beech Island, Lt. Michael Frank said Monday.

One of the men pointed a shotgun out the window and demanded money from the store owner. When he refused to turn over a bank bag, the man fired a shot, narrowly missing the victim, authorities said.

The men sped away toward Augusta. No arrests have been made, Lt. Frank said.

At about 9:30 p.m. Friday night in Monetta, authorities said, an argument at a home on Lott Road escalated into a stabbing. The home's owner, Clarence Small, 25, stabbed Rodney L. Windless, 24, of Monetta, Lt. Frank said.

The victim was airlifted to Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital. Mr. Small is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center.

On Saturday, deputies responded to a security alarm at 7:25 a.m. on Sequoia Street in Aiken, where they saw two men run out the back door of the home. A perimeter was established, and the bloodhound team was called to the scene, but no arrests have been made, officials said.

That afternoon, deputies respond to a 911 call at an Aiken home where they discover the body of Ashley Marie Johnson, 17. The man who called authorities has been charged in the slaying.

Later that evening, police responded to another robbery, one that left one victim with a bullet in his knee. Two men kicked in the doors of two apartments on Eutaw Street in Aiken. One of the men fired several shots from a handgun, striking an Augusta man, Marquise Lawson, 26, in the left knee, Lt. Frank said.

Aiken Department of Public Safety officers found Mr. Lawson limping on Abbeville Avenue, and he was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Authorities said no arrests have been made in the incident.

Lt. Frank said officials don't know whether the weekend robberies are connected.
