An Army private from Fort Gordon has died from injuries suffered in a one-car accident over the weekend in which he was a passenger, authorities said Tuesday.
Pvt. Sanford Andrew Hawkins Jr., 21, died Monday afternoon at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Richmond County Deputy Coroner Mark Brown said. He suffered severe brain damage in an accident early Sunday morning on Barton Chapel Road.
The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Alann O. Kelly of Hephzibah, remains in critical condition today at MCG, a hospital official said. If he recovers, he will face charges of vehicular homicide and driving too fast for conditions, said Maj. Larry Vinson with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
The two men were riding in a 1996 Kia Sephia early Sunday when Mr. Kelly lost control of the vehicle, ran off Barton Chapel Road and slammed into a tree on the property of Hammett Electric, said Investigator Terry Skinner with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Both men had to be extricated from the vehicle and were rushed to MCG.
Witnesses said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed just before the accident occurred. A test to determine whether the driver had been drinking is pending, and Mr. Kelly was faulted with driving too fast for conditions, a traffic report states.
Mr. Hawkins was a computer specialist with the information management section of Fort Gordon, said installation spokeswoman Marla Jones.
