Federal employees working in the Augusta area will gather May 30 at Fort Gordon to honor exceptional workers at the Federal Executives Association's fifth annual Employees of the Year luncheon.
"The main point is to recognize the employees who have made these outstanding contributions," said Mike Gunn, Federal Executives Association chairman and air traffic manager at Augusta Regional Airport.
"We would also like to bring a little more awareness to the fact that Augusta's federal work force is larger than a lot of people think. It has a huge economic impact on the area."
Of the 205,500 non-agricultural jobs in the Augusta-Aiken area in April, 7,600 belong to federal government employees, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
The event will name nine employees of the year from Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Savannah River Site, U.S. Forest Service, Fort Gordon, Federal Corrections Institution and Army Corps of Engineers.
"These are your next-door neighbors," said Pat Buchholz, strategic management officer at Fort Gordon. "You may not recognize them when they get up and go to work, but these are the people who are working for your federal government."
The Federal Executives Association was started four years ago so senior executives at federal agencies in the area could share ideas and resources.
The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Gordon Club at Fort Gordon and is open to the public. Tickets are $10.64 and are available through reservations at 791-3752.
State Rep. Ben Harbin, R-Augusta, will be the featured speaker, and Matt Monroe from Channel 6 will be the master of ceremonies.
After lunch, Mayor Bob Young will officially proclaim May 30 as Federal Employees Appreciation Day.
