Plants and ideas will be swapped at annual event

You can pick up new plants for the landscape and get gardening ideas at the fifth annual Pendleton King Park Plant Swap and Sale, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pendleton King Park Pavilion, 1600 Troupe St.

The event is for people who love gardening, and it seems to grow every year, said Kay Mills, event organizer and a member of the Pendleton King Park Commission. More than 300 people visited the swap and sale last year.

Many first-time visitors leave with a handful of plants and return the next year with new sprouts to sell or trade, she said.

"We're just getting people into gardening," Mrs. Mills said. "They are planting their first plant, and it's not going to be their last. People really seem to have a good time."

Plants will be traded and plants and other garden-related items can be sold. Most of the sellers are just garden lovers who want to share their ideas and plants, she said. Sellers will be responsible for display tables and equipment.

Gates open at 9 a.m. for setup. Plants can be sold or traded at the selling tables.

A vendor will make live impatiens wreaths and another will sell hardwood tree seedlings. Tools, pots and garden accents will also be available.

The plant swap allows gardeners to trade. A plant is placed in the swap area in exchange for another.

"Some people don't like to bargain in the trading," said Mrs. Mills. "They are a little bit shy. So we thought the swap was a good way to get people going and understanding what's going on."

Mrs. Mills hopes the swap and sale will open the door to gardening for many who have never been interested in the hobby. It will help beginners get started and veteran gardeners get some new ideas and projects.

A "free table" will include gardening magazines, pots and other gardening supplies. Master gardeners will be available to answer questions.

The event is a cooperative effort of the CSRA Master Gardeners and Pendleton King Park Commission. For more information, call Mrs. Mills at 738-4321 or go to tkmills@knology.net.
