Outdoors calendar



NOTE: All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations might be required.

April 28: A canoe trip to the Savannah River rapids will begin at Savannah Rapids Pavilion at 9 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Sierra Club's Savannah River Group, and some paddling experience is required. Call 724-5077 for more information.

April 29: The 14th annual Augusta Canal Cruise and Bike Ride will be today. Canoeists will meet at Lake Olmstead at 1 p.m. and will be bused to the head gates. Tickets are $40, which includes canoe and barbecue. Bicyclist tickets are $20. Proceeds benefit Peach State Public Radio and the Canal Authority. Call 823-0440 for tickets.

May 4-6: The Publix Family Fitness Weekend will be held at Wildwood park on Thurmond Lake, including a 5K Trail Run, EMS Adventure race, a 1 mile Lean Cuisine Swim, a Coca-Cola Triathlon and a Nestle Tollhouse Sprint. Call 722-8326 for information.

May 12: A tour of Heggie's Rock in Columbia County will be held at 10 a.m. The preserve is an unusual rock outcrop with many rare and endangered plants. Call 736-5951 for information.

May 12: The 19th annual Easter Seals Open Team Bass Tournament will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Clarks Hill Lake. First prize is $5,000. Entry fee is $30 per person or $60 per team. Pre-registration will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. May 10 At Augusta Marina. Call 667-9675 for information.

May 12: A Youth Fishing Rodeo will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fish Hatchery at Magnolia Springs State Park near Millen, Ga. Sponsors are Wings Forever and Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Admission is free; drinks and prizes are included. Call (912) 355-1817 for information.

May 12: A three-hour boat tour of the ACE Basin featuring tidal marshes and other habitat will be held by the Aiken County Land Trust. Cost is $30 per person. Call 803-649-3380 for information.

The Fort Gordon Sportsman's Club meets on the third Thursday night of each month at 6 p.m. Membership is open to the public. The shooting range (7A) will be open to the public for firing and zeroing in rifles. A 3-D archery range also is available. Cost is $6 per person ($3 to club members).
