Woman tries to help husband, dies of heart attack

An elderly woman collapsed from a heart attack and died Thursday while trying to summon help for her husband, who was pinned under a tractor at their farm in Grovetown.

Columbia County Deputy Coroner Vernon Collins said he pronounced Ruby Newman, 79, dead at 7:08 p.m., not long after the incident occurred on property off the 600 block of Gibbs Road South.

Mr. Collins said the woman's husband parked his tractor under a shed, then got off with it still running. It shifted into gear, rolled on him and might have killed him had a parked car not stopped it from rolling farther, Mr. Collins said.

Mrs. Newman apparently saw what had happened and ran for help. She died at the scene. Her sister, who lives nearby, rode there on a golf cart to check on the couple and discovered her lying on the ground, Mr. Collins said.

Officers from Grovetown Department of Public Safety rescued the husband, whose first name was not available Thursday night. He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment.
