Ex-Ga. flag symbolized inequality

In this hostile environment, I can't help but admire Paul Cook's courage in expressing his feelings concerning Georgia's new state flag (letter, April 8).

Mr. Cook is right. We began flying the previous flag in defiance of the civil rights movement. So-called Democrats left the party in droves as an expression of their displeasure over equality. I think what Mr. Cook is ashamed of is that so many of his fellow Southerners are still fighting the War Between the States.

Those of you who have served in the U.S. military did not serve under the Confederate flag. Those of you who wish the South would secede from the union are not worthy of being called Americans.

Our recently returned men and women from China wore an American flag patch on their arm. I don't know how many Southerners none wore Confederate flag arm patches.

Regardless of who started the War Between the States or why, when it was over the slaves were free and the United States was still united.
