Outdoors calendar



NOTE:

All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations may be required.

April 15: The Sierra Club will sponsor a trip to the Carolina Heritage Trust Property on Stevens Creek beginning at 1 p.m. Visitors will see endangered plants and animals. Call 650-8314 for information.

April 17: A lecture on the Amazon River will be part of the Sierra Club's monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church, 3501 Walton Way. Admission is free. Call 863-2324 for information.

April 21: The Canoe and Kayak Club of Augusta will hold a paddle and cookout at Riverside Park in Evans. Contact Bernie Thomas at 860-6416 for information.

April 21: An Earth Day Celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Tours and workshops on plants and wildlife will be included with events fo all ages. Call 828-2109 for information.

April 21: A "Warbler Walk" at Edisto State Park will be held. Meet at 8 a.m. behind McDonald's at I-20's Exit 22 at U.S. Hwy. 1 in Aiken County. The event is sponsored by the Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society and the Aiken County open Land Trust.

April 27-29: A Medical Wilderness Adventure Race involving teams of health care professionals who will hike, run and canoe will be held at Wildwood Park. The event is sponsored by the Medical College of Georgia's Department of Emergency Medicine. Online information is available at www.medwar2001.com/whatsnew.htm.

April 28: A canoe trip to the Savannah River rapids will begin at Savannah Rapids Pavilion at 9 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Sierra Club's Savannah River Group, and some paddling experience is required. Call 724-5077 for information.

May 12: A tour of Heggie's Rock in Columbia County will be held starting at 10 a.m. The preserve is an unusual rock outcrop with many rare and endangered plants. Call 736-5951 for information.

May 12: A three-hour boat tour of the ACE Basin featuring tidal marshes and other habitat will be held by the Aiken County Land Trust. Cost is $30 per person, and the registration deadline is April 25. Call (803) 649-3380 for information.
