Riggs wins Advance Auto Parts 250

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Scott Riggs' gamble paid off big.

Riggs passed up a tire-change stop to grab the lead with 108 laps to go Saturday and made the same rubber last for 151 laps to win the Advance Auto Parts 250 Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

"It's a tire that is really consistent and doesn't fall off," Riggs said. "I figured if they go in and get tires, if I could stay ahead of them for about 25 or 30 laps, the tires were just super consistent from then on out and aren't that much faster than older tires.

"I was thinking more about gas, really."

Riggs, the series points leader entering the race, pitted for right-side tires after 87 laps, left sides after 99 laps and stopped for gas only thereafter en route to his first career victory in his 23rd start.

The victory was the fourth in four races for Dodge this season. Travis Kvapil was second in a Chevrolet, and Terry Cook third in a Ford.

"Everybody made me look good today," Riggs said after warding off challenges from defending race champion Bobby Hamilton and others at the end. "I thought at first that Hamilton was going to give me a run, but he had to pit there at the end. Then Travis put some pressure on me, but we were able to get away from him after that last restart."

Several times, Riggs pulled away, most notably after a caution erased his four-second advantage over Hamilton with 52 laps to go. Shortly thereafter, Hamilton's race ended when his transmission went bad.

Two more cautions, the eighth and ninth of the day, put Kvapil on Riggs' bumper, but each time Riggs' pulled away. The victory extended Riggs' points lead to 27 over Joe Ruttman and 65 over Ricky Hendrick.

"Scott did what he needed to do," Kvapil said of the restart. "He gained all the track position right there, and I wasn't able to catch up."

Cook raced without a sponsor, but hopes that will change soon.

"I think this will make a believer out of most people," he said following his fourth top-10 finish in as many races. "We're needing a sponsor and we're a team to put it on. We're running up front each week."

Ruttman finished fourth, followed by Randy Tolsma, Matt Crafton, Rick Crawford, Bryan Reffner, Hendrick and Nathan Haseleu.

The race featured only three lead changes, was slowed for 52 laps by cautions and ended with only 19 of the 36 trucks still running.

Riggs' average speed was 70.836 mph, and he won by .874 seconds.

Jon Wood, 19, making his debut in the series, started 31st and climbed as high as 15th before his truck's rear end broke.
