Although the former Congress reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act in October, this new Congress has not appropriated funds to support programs so vital to the safety of vulnerable women.
As a graduate nursing student I have seen firsthand the benefits of shelter, advocacy and counseling programs for women and children who have suffered the horror of domestic violence. Unless VAWA is fully funded these programs will be unable to continue to help these victims and survivors.
Congress is considering the budget for the next fiscal year and plans to distribute the budget surplus to individual taxpayers. I urge every morally responsible person to call, write or e-mail representatives in Washington to demand that they support full appropriations for VAWA. Women's lives are at stake.
