Mr. Martin DeWitt



AUGUSTA, Ga. - M r. Mr. Martin "Slick" DeWitt, 89, of Augusta, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Doctors Hospital. Mr. DeWitt was the husband of the late Ellie Elizabeth Speering DeWitt, the late Vurna Criswell Sanders DeWitt and the late Margaret Gurney DeWitt. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Platts Belair Road Chapel, Evans, with Pastor John Edwards officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will follow at Westover Memorial Park with Dr. Hershel Don Yancy officiating. A native of Augusta, Mr. DeWitt had retired from Hart Electric Company and D & S Electric Company and was one of the original developers of the DuPont plant. He was also a former longtime City of Augusta councilman. He was a member of Advent Lutheran Church as well as IBEW Local #1579, a member of Webb Lodge #166, the Scottish Rite, the Augusta Lions Club, the Turning Point Investment Club and a member of the Augusta Toastmasters Club. Mr.DeWitt was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award of the Lions Club. Survivors include two sons, Mr. Robert L. DeWitt and Mr. Terry M. DeWitt, both of Evans; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Ridlehoover of Lincolnton; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Barbara Metts of Albany, Ga., Mrs. Kristine Wiedman of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mrs. Carol Seals of Augusta; one sister, Mrs. Frances Wallace of North Charleston, S.C.; eight grandchildren, three step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a stepgreat grandchild. Serving as pallbearers will be John Adams Sr., John Adams, Earl Ridlehoover, David DeWitt, Mike Toomer and David C. Crews. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Webb Lodge #166. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, (tonight).
