Tanker truck burns after overturning

A tanker truck loaded with diesel fuel and gasoline overturned between Beech Island and Jackson on Friday, igniting a fire and creating a gray smoke plume that could be seen in Belvedere.

Beech Island Fire Chief Leon Henderson said the accident happened when the tanker truck ran off the road, the driver overcompensated and the truck turned over, causing an explosion.

The accident happened about 5:45 p.m. on Highway 125 and took firefighters from several different departments more than an hour to get the blaze under control using a foam to smother the flames. Hazardous material and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control crews were also working to clean up a spill of fuel, some of which ended up in a nearby pond.

Traffic was being routed around the scene while emergency officials worked.

Three people were injured in the incident, said Chief Henderson. The driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital with burns; a passerby who pulled the driver from the truck was also burned; and a firefighter - Kyle Ledbetter - overcome by heat was taken to University Hospital.
