Hundreds of aces have been made at Green Meadows Country Club since the south Augusta course opened in 1960.
None have been anything like the one Richard Charnock made recently.
The 44-year-old Charnock aced the ninth hole, a 327-yard par-4. It's the first time a par-4 hole has been aced at the course.
Charnock hit a driver off the tee. It took two hops in front of the green, then rolled onto the green and into the hole.
"It kind of amazed us all," said Charnock, whose playing partners were Leonard Eubanks, Tripp Mackie and Ron Williams.
It also came as a shock to the foursome on the green when the ball went in the hole.
"One guy was holding the pin and he felt it go in," Charnock said. "He said he wondered at first where it came from. Then they realized it had to have come from the tee."
The ninth hole is a straightaway par-4 with an elevated tee and green.
"I figured my odds of winning the lottery were better than making an ace there," Charnock said. "Because it has an elevated green, the shot has got to take the right bounces."
The ace came three days after Andrew Magee holed out his tee shot on the 333-yard 17th hole in the PGA Tour's Phoenix Open. It was the first time in PGA Tour history that a golfer aced a par-4 hole.
As for Charnock, it was his second career ace. The first came on the toughest par-3 at Green Meadows, the 18th hole.
Entries are being accepted for the 16th annual Mr. Perry's Invitational at The Club at Jones Creek. A Pro-Am is scheduled for March 16, followed by the 36-hole tournament March 17-18.
