Kroger robbery suspect arrested

Police arrested a man early Monday and charged him in connection with the Sunday night armed robbery of the Kroger Supermarket at 2801 Washington Road.

Police arrested Cecil Earl Johnson Jr., 55, at his residence in the 2300 block of Barton Chapel Road at 6:45 a.m. Monday, and charged him with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, said Richmond County Sheriff's Office Investigator Richard Roundtree.

A witness provided police with a tag number of the vehicle that was seen leaving the parking lot after the robbery, Investigator Roundtree said.

Mr. Johnson is accused of pulling out a handgun and demanding money from the cashier around 9 p.m. Sunday, police said.
