Area boxers do well at tourney

North Augusta's Christopher Newman officially was crowned champion of his division in the National Silver Gloves tournament, which ended Saturday in Lenexa, Kan.

Newman, 14, was unopposed in the 14-15 year-old, 75-pound weight class.

Meanwhile, Yon Harvison of the Augusta Boxing Club won the silver medal in the 11-year-old, 60-pound class. Harris, who won by decision in Thursday and Friday bouts, lost a 3-2 decision to Mike Kemp of Philadelphia in the finals.

North Augustan Noah Newman III lost by decision in his first match in the 14-15 year-old, 139-pound division to DeShon Baker of Cleveland, Ohio.

Augusta Boxing Club's Tyler Walls lost by decision to Aaron Turner of Lake Oswego, Ore., in a 12-13 year old, 139-pound match on Thursday.

Boxers had to be regional champions to qualify for the Silver Gloves, which is for youngster ages 10-15.
