And the winner is ...

We give up!

After nearly two weeks of sorting, counting and recounting more than 2,600 ballots, we don't know who Augusta's favorite radio personality is.

Despite our best efforts to keep disc jockeys and their enthusiastic fans from stuffing the ballot box, it's obvious that some creative voting occurred.

For example:

Numerous groups of five to 25 ballots submitted via our Web site just minutes apart bore exactly the same picks in all five categories.

"No, I didn't vote ... . One of my kids probably sent it in," said one man when we called to verify his electronic ballot.

Groups of ballots bore different voters' names but identical handwriting.

Ballots listed phone numbers that had been disconnected.

The more we looked, the more suspicious we became.

We attempted to verify 5 percent of the ballots received by randomly calling the people who submitted them. We reached almost 150 voters, and all but a few verified their answers. These radio listeners' ballots showed that their tastes varied throughout the day. They marked DJs from different stations in each category.

But we found a greater margin of error when we shifted our focus to ballots in which a station's full slate of DJs was checked off. Irregularities occurred in virtually every category, but the contest boiled down to 123 ballots sent in by a Warren County fan club of WPRW-FM 107 (Power 107).

Our instructions stated that ballots that did not include each voter's name, address and phone number would be disqualified. However, it appears that the ballot faxed to the group from WBBQ chopped off the bottom of the form and the line requesting daytime phone numbers.

So while some of the votes look legitimate, we have no way to verify them.

If these 123 ballots are eliminated, the Power 107 disc jockeys would lose their first-place ranking in three categories to the DJs at Y105. However, a large number of ballots delivered by Y105 were copies with the station's personalities pre-marked. Listeners only signed their names at the bottom. Should these votes count?

You decide.

The ballot asking readers to vote for their favorite radio personalities was printed on Jan. 21 and 23. Thousands of e-mails, faxes and mailed entries poured into the newsroom each day. The polls closed at 6 p.m. Wednesday. (We are still receiving votes - you can stop now.)

Local disc jockeys did almost anything to get listeners' votes. They begged; they blackmailed; they even took their clothes off!

Jay Cruze, evening DJ on WZNY-FM, threatened his listeners with nonstop music by Hanson if he wasn't voted top evening jock.

Dakota West and sidekick Dangerboy, also on WZNY-FM, earned votes by stripping down to their "jockeys" outside a convenience store. Their antics made the evening news on two local stations.

Thanks to all who submitted just one vote. Shame on those who didn't!
