Lady Musketeers rally past Westside

Richmond Academy girls basketball coach Pat Rivers wasn't sure which Westside team would show up Friday night.

After three quarters of play, it was obvious that it wasn't the same squad her team faced the first time.

The Lady Musketeers needed a 12-2 run late in the fourth quarter to rally and knock off the Lady Patriots 49-42 in Region 3-AAA action Friday night.

In their first meeting this season, the Lady Musketeers took care of the Lady Patriots 69-44, but in the second half Friday night, Richmond Academy was trailing Westside by nine points.

"Westside is a dangerous team, they can beat you on any night," Rivers said. "What we did the first time surely didn't matter."

After Richmond Academy's Bridgette Cates nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game at 15-all midway through the second quarter, Westside rolled off a 10-1 run, taking a 25-16 lead after Keoshia Worthy drove the length of the floor for a layup.

The Lady Patriots took a 25-18 lead into intermission, but the Lady Musketeers came out of the half and chipped away, cutting the margin to two after Leah Wilson dropped in a 3-pointer late in the third quarter.

"We didn't hit a lot of shots and you have to credit Westside's defense for that," Rivers added. "They've got some good shooters, but they were getting too many second shots in the first half. We blocked them out pretty well in the second half and that was critical."

Richmond Academy took their first lead of the game with 6:01 left in the final period, going ahead 39-38 after a Marie Reid put-back. Reid spent much of the first half on the bench in foul trouble, but played strong in the second half, dominating the boards.

The Lady Musketeers (9-10) improved their region record to 5-4 while the Lady Patriots (3-17) slipped to 2-7.
