Married couples can get a tuneup

Two marriage seminars at Augusta-area churches will try to put sparks that will outlast Valentine's Day back into relationships.

One is a back-to-basics approach. The Rev. John and Margie McClure, Newport Beach, Calif.-based radio hosts of The Word and the Spirit, will present Becoming One, at The Vineyard Church-Augusta at 7 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3.

The other is a marital tuneup. The Rev. John Erwin, pastor of families at Grace Church, a 3,500-member nondenominational congregation in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, will lead Winning With Your Home Team at First Baptist Church, North Augusta, at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, and 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.

Becoming One will be like the McClures' numerous books on marriage - practical, non-threatening and fun, said the Rev. Reese LeRoy, associate pastor at The Vineyard. "It will be a good time."

The whole mysterious union of marriage "is intended to make two into one. That `one flesh-ness' is created by the Lord when they marry," Mrs. McClure said.

But at some point a husband and wife begin "to note their differences - the two who became one may become two again or even drift far apart," she said.

She and her husband will teach couples how to get back together if spats, sex and lack of communication have pushed them apart. The conference is a wellness seminar for newlyweds as well as couples who have been married for decades.

Registration for Becoming One is $30 a couple, $40 after Sunday. Call 863-9766 or visit the Web site www.vineyardaugusta.org. The McClures' radio program can be heard at their Web site, www.wordandspirit.org.

No one is exempt from the stresses marriages face today, said the Rev. Erwin, who has spoken at church and secular conferences all over the country for 10 years. "We want to take a pro-active approach, whether you come from a churched or an unchurched background."

Parents today are caught in the "busy-is-better" trap - they think travel, games four nights a week and a multitude of other activities are necessary to get "the kids in the right schools," the Rev. Erwin said. "They are over-parenting."

His talks on the hurried family, the secrets of staying together, affair-proofing a marriage and passing on the spiritual baton to children offer principles that can lead to lifelong changes, he said.

Registration is $60, which includes materials and two meals. For more information, call 279-6370 or visit the Web site www.gracechurch-mn.org.
