Area man wounded in home invasion

An Augusta man was in critical condition late Monday after being shot in the face during a home invasion in which he and a woman were kidnapped and forced to drive to a relative's home.

Few details were available, but authorities said several men broke into a home on Cumberland Drive, kidnapped a man and woman inside and forced them to drive to a home on Thompson Drive, where relatives of the victims lived, said Richmond County Sheriff's Investigator Calvin Chew.

The man was taken inside by some of the intruders while the other attacker stayed in the car with the woman. During the robbery, the man was shot in the left side of his face.

He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was in critical condition, according to Valerie Spratlin, spokeswoman for Rural/Metro Ambulance.

Police don't know whether a home invasion reported shortly before the Thompson Drive incident was related. In that incident, three armed men in ski masks forced open the back door of a townhome on Walden Drive, said sheriff's Investigator William Walker. The men met a woman at the top of the stairs and told her stay on the floor. They ransacked the upstairs bedrooms and fled.

An attempted home invasion also was reported Monday night on Silverwood Drive, but no details were available.
