The Augusta Stallions arenafootball2 franchise will hold auditions for its 2001 cheerleading squad at 3 p.m. Saturday at Health Central, 945 Broad St.
"We are looking for an A-plus-plus personality," said Darrell Harbin, general manager of the Stallions. "We want someone who smiling comes natural to."
In fact, he wants 16 to 20 someones who like to smile - and dance.
"It's all dancing," Spirit Director Tammie Newman said, "but a formal dance background is not required."
A willingness to learn and a positive attitude will go a long way, she said.
"If the cheerleaders are having fun, the crowd is having fun," Mr. Harbin said.
Cheerleader applicants must be female, 18 or older, and physically fit. The 17 women on last year's squad ranged in age from 18 to 29.
The Stallions also are holding tryouts for Tony the Pony, the team mascot.
Men and women are eligible to audition for that position. Tony candidates must be willing to wear a faux-fur jumper and a heavy stuffed pony-head. They also should be enthusiastic about interacting with the crowd.
Judges are seeking cheerleaders with outgoing personalities. A flexible schedule also is required. In addition to attending two days of practice a week and all eight home games (on Saturday nights), the squad will be called on to appear at charity golf tournaments, blood drives, parades and maybe a charity auction. Recently, the 2000 team pumped gas and served coffee for customers at a Bryant's gas station.
Tryouts will consist of a dance routine to be taught on Saturday afternoon. Finalists will learn a second routine to be performed at the final round of tryouts on Jan. 17. Finalists also will be interviewed by judges on Jan. 15. Members of last year's cheerleading squad are exempt from the first round of tryouts but must compete in the second round.
There is a $15 non-refundable application fee, and all candidates must bring a current photo and resume.
"The resume can be professional work or dance experience," Ms. Newman said, "as long as it gives me some idea of their background."
Advance registration is not necessary, but participants not already registered should come early.
Ms. Newman asks that all candidates wear athletic shoes and aerobic or dance wear. No loose T-shirts.
