FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield confirmed the transfer of forward Ajou Deng from No. 10 Connecticut on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-10 junior has not practiced with the Huskies since early December. He was averaging 4.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 14.8 minutes through six games this season. He grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in an 86-72 win over Quinnipiac on Nov. 17.
Deng began taking classes at Fairfield Wednesday.
Deng escaped turmoil in his native Sudan and arrived at Connecticut three years ago as a highly touted recruit.
He sat out the 1998-99 season to concentrate on academics and scored a career-high 12 points last season against Boston College.
Deng will be eligible to play basketball for the Stags next January. If he graduates in the spring semester of 2002, he would gain another year of eligibility.
