Say it isn't so, Jack. Say it isn't so.
The Dec. 22 Chronicle quotes Jack Nicklaus as saying: "If I get to the Masters and think I can compete, I'll play. If I don't, I won't play."
I have followed the Bear at the Masters every year beginning in 1965. There have been some great moments. There have been some sad ones, too. Saturday and Sunday of 2000 were near the top of the saddest. I realized that nature's plan has affected my sports hero of so many years.
Mr. Nicklaus is and has been a great ambassador for the game of golf. It is my feeling that he should continue to be that ambassador for as long as his legs will allow him to walk up the 18th hole at the Augusta National.
Mr. Nicklaus has been good for golf. But golf has been good for him, too. It is not about winning now. I really don't expect him to win at Augusta anymore. I just want him to play, to be there, just to let us see him and remember 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986, and yes, 2000.
Just say it isn't so, Jack...
