ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia running back Jasper Sanks was arrested Wednesday night in his hometown of Columbus on the misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana.
Sanks was arrested at 9 p.m. Wednesday at a Best Western motel on Macon Highway. According to the police report, agents conducted a drug investigation at the hotel and detained Sanks in one of the motel's rooms.
Police found less than an once of marijuana in the room.
Sanks said he was guilty only of bad timing. According to Sanks, he had a friend from the military in town, and the two went to the Best Western to meet with friends who "don't all do the right thing."
"At the time I knocked on the door, they all busted out running," Sanks said. "They just came all charging out and knocked me down. By the time I got up to see what was going on, it was too late. It was just being in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Sanks, who paid $321.25 worth of bond and court costs to be released, had his first hearing in Recorder's Court at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Sanks said if he had known there was marijuana in the room, he wouldn't have gone. Sanks said Marcus Gordon "apparently owned up to it" and said that Gordon's story changed once he reached the station. The junior also said that he did not know Gordon prior to Wednesday's events.
Gordon, Latavious Watts, Brian Williams, Michael Osoh, Damien Young and Tommy Henderson were all charged with possession of marijuana. Young was also charged with two counts of bribery and possession with intent.
