Augusta prepares to party

With state liquor laws knocking bars out of contention for New Year's Eve dollars, hotels and restaurants, which are allowed Sunday liquor licenses, are stepping in to take up the slack.

"That's why we're doing this," said Don Davis, manager at Half-Shell Harry's, a restaurant that opened in October in the National Hills shopping center on Washington Road. Half-Shell Harry's is planning a party with a seafood and prime rib buffet, dancing, live music, unlimited champagne and draft beer and a late-night breakfast buffet for $99 per couple.

"We're selling tickets in advance because we only have 40 tables and we don't want to overcrowd. But I still think we'll have 120-140 people," Mr. Davis said.

Better call ahead if you're planning to go out for New Year's Eve. Applebee's and other restaurants that don't normally take reservations are advising customers to make them.
