Calendar stuffed with holiday joy



The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and so is the Christmas performance and event calendar. Here are some highlights:

HOLIDAY MALL CONCERTS: While it may not relieve all the stress of holiday shopping, a series of free concerts, performed by local students, will be presented at 6:30 nightly through Friday, Dec. 15, at the Augusta Mall's Sears Court Stage. Call 733-1001.

FANTASY OF LIGHTS: A drive-through, audio-guided holiday light display runs through Dec. 24 at Pendleton King Park off Troupe Street. The display features 113 light sculptures with more than 1 million lights. The display opens nightly at 6. Admission is $7 per car and benefits Easter Seals. Call 667-9695.

CHRISTMAS IN HOPELANDS: Aiken residents can enjoy a holiday light display at Hopeland Gardens from 6 to 9 nightly through Christmas. Hot chocolate, apple cider and cookies will be available, and the gardens will sponsor concerts and tours of historic buildings. Call (803) 642-7631.

IT'S THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS: Augusta West Performing Companies will present It's the Night Before Christmas at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Augusta State University's Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. Tickets are $7, or $5 for seniors and age 10 and younger, and proceeds benefit Augusta's Make a Wish Foundation. Call 738-0729.

AIKEN JAYCEE CHRISTMAS PARADE: Aiken's annual kickoff to the Christmas season begins on Park Avenue at Union Street at 3 p.m. Sunday and travels to Laurens Street and on to Edgefield Avenue. Call (803) 648-6494.

CHORAL CONCERTS: The Augusta Chorale, the Augusta Collegium Musicum and the Augusta Choral Society will all present holiday concerts this week. The Augusta Chorale presents its annual Christmas concert, featuring a wide array of holiday music, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Paine College's Gilbert Lambuth Chapel. The Augusta Collegium Musicum will present its concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Augusta Museum of History, and the Augusta Choral Society will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Cultural Center. Tickets for the Augusta Chorale are $10 for adults and $5 students. Admission for the Augusta Collegium Musicum is free to museum members and $5 for nonmembers.
