Holiday happenings



The following is a list of upcoming holiday season events in the Augusta-Aiken area.

Today

Holiday tree trimming will be at 6 p.m. at Augusta Technical College. The evening will include a visit from Santa Claus, holiday songs, face paintings and handmade goodies. For more information, call Kathleen Fervan at 771-4084.

Paine College Choir will perform its winter concert at 7:30 p.m. at Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel, 1235 15th St. The event is free. For more information, call 736-5619.

Throughout December

The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism will present Christmas at Hampton, a holiday decoration and light show, from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays at Hampton Plantation State Historic Site. Admission costs $2 for adults and $1 for children, but patrons can get in free with canned-good donations. No registration is required. Friday

Gracewood State School and Hospital will have a tree-lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. for staff and clients. For more information, call 790-2503.

The Augusta Ballet production of The Nutcracker will be performed at 8 p.m. today and Dec. 8. There will be performances at 1 and 5 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 9, and at 3 p.m. Sunday and Dec. 10 at Imperial Theatre, 745 Broad St. Tickets cost $10-$35 and are available at the box office at Sacred Heart Cultural Center, 1301 Greene St., or by calling 261-0555. Discounts are available for children and senior citizens. A Sugar Plum Special is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday. The price is $20 for the first 200 orders for orchestra and mezzanine seating.

Sunday

The Augusta Opera will perform at St. Paul's, featuring five international soloists, the Augusta Children's Chorale, the Augusta Opera Chorus and Orchestra, and the University of Georgia Brass Ensemble. Performances will be at 3:30 and 6 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 605 Reynolds St. Tickets cost $25 at Merry Times in Surrey Center, or call 826-4710.

A holiday festival for the family, A Christmas Afternoon at Sacred Heart, will be at 11:30 a.m. at 1301 Greene St. Gift items by local artists will be for sale along with baked goods. Seasonal entertainment will be performed by area choirs. For information, call 826-4700.

Jackson will celebrate its Christmas parade at 2 p.m. Civic groups, churches and schools will have floats in the event, and Santa Claus is expected to ride in the parade.

The University of South Carolina Aiken Masterworks Chorale performs Handel's Messiah at 4 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aiken. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for students, and are available at the Etherredge Center Box Office. For tickets, call the box office at 641-3305.

Monday

A Family Christmas Pops Concert will be at 7 p.m. at Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre, Augusta State University, 2500 Walton Way. The performance includes a musical narration of A Visit from St. Nicholas ('Twas the Night Before Christmas). Tickets cost $6 for adults and $3 for children, senior citizens, and Augusta State faculty, staff and students; call 667-4100.

Tuesday

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first service at Sacred Heart Church, will be at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cultural Center, 1301 Greene St. The event will include choirs from the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, St. Mary on the Hill and St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church. The fourth-grade pupils of Brookwood Elementary School will present The Nutcracker at the following times and places: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brookwood; 9 and 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Brookwood; 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Brookwood;9:30 a.m. Friday at Warren Road Elementary School; and 10:45 a.m. Friday at Forest Lake Nursing Home.
