Unsolved murders time line

Based on police records, these are the unsolved homicides in the Augusta area since 1973:

Richmond County 2000

Feb. 6: An unidentified body was found behind Golden Harvest Food Bank warehouse by an employee. The victim was a black male, estimated to be in his late teens or early 20s, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 151 pounds. He had been shot in the head.

June 1: Shanta White, 22, was shot once in the abdomen at close range while sitting in her car talking on a cell phone in front of her home in the 2200 block of Raleigh Drive. She was eight months pregnant, and the unborn baby died with her.

Oct. 25: Holland Kinsey, 52, was found dead in his Rhodes Drive home. He had been strangled and slashed with a knife. A neighbor, Anthony Betts, 24, died from injuries hours earlier when he crashed Mr. Kinsey's Chevrolet Blazer into a utility pole on Eighth Street while fleeing police.


March 13: Jason Larry Toomer, 26, was hit in a drive-by shooting in front of his home in the 2400 block of Southgate Drive. He died a half-hour later at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

April 22: The body of an unidentified black female was found in a burning car behind a building at 2813 Regency Blvd. The car had South Carolina license plates.


Feb. 12: Terrence Doggett, 20, was found dead from a gunshot wound to his head at his home in Foxwood Apartments. His girlfriend found him.

April 26: Tyrone Cathcart Jr., 21, of the 3900 block of Deans Bridge Road, was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head. James Mims of Pinnacle Place Drive, who was at the mobile home at the time of the shooting, told police he was in another room and heard a shot and a car driving away.

Nov. 21: Police responding to a call about gunshots found Eugene Crawford, 19, off Conniston Drive near Butler Manor subdivision, apparently shot several times.

Dec. 4: Robert Thurmond, 20, died at Medical College of Georgia Hospital from a gunshot wound received two days earlier outside his Brown Lane home by a man who called him "Little Bob" and chased him.

Dec. 6: Boise Eugene Hankerson, 20, of the 1300 block of Emmitt Street, was killed in a drive-by shooting as he was sitting in his car at a Citgo station at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 15th Street.


Feb. 6: Todd Gerald Winkler, 33, was found in the bathroon of his home in the 3000 block of Mabos Road. He died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Feb. 28: Lena Arkansas Toole, 87, died of a brain hemorrhage after a boy riding a bike tried to snatch her purse in the 1500 block of Whitney Street.March 18: Phillip Beard, 43, of the 1100 block of 13th Avenue, was shot in his head during a triple drive-by shooting at about 11:30 p.m. A dark-blue or black Oldsmobile Cutlass drove down the street, and shots were fired. A woman and a 19-year-old male also were shot. Drugs were said to be the motive. On July 15, Frank Glover III, 21, of the 200 block of Telfair Street, was charged with malice murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Charges were dismissed at a July 31 preliminary hearing.

March 30: James Gramling, 20, left his parents' house on his all-terrain vehicle to see a friend and was never seen again. The vehicle was found in a wooded area off Windsor Spring Road covered in blood. Police said he is presumed dead and considered a homicide.

June 6: Albert "Buddy" Pendrey, 66, died of head wounds that police suspect he suffered in a struggle with burglars. His body was found in a trailer behind Mack's Kuntry Store on Windsor Spring Road.

July 13: The body of Delphine Brown, 36, was found beside Laney-Walker Boulevard. The cause of death was a series of blows to her head and chest, possibly from when she was thrown from a car.

July 24: The bodies of Ryan Joseph Singh, 21, of the 4200 block of Beckmont Street, and Manuel Bernardo Arroyo, 19, of the 3000 block of Miranda Road, were found in the trunk of a burning car in Warren County, off Otis Jones Road. Both had been shot before the stolen 1979 Buick Regal was burned.

Oct. 30: Ruben Maldonado, 17, was shot to death during a drive-by shooting in front of his Sparks Avenue home.


Feb. 18: Bridgette Benita Williams, 35, of the 1100 block of Summer Street, was found in a ditch in the 1200 block of New Savannah Road. The mother of five had died of multiple stab wounds.

April 29: The nude body of Michelle D. Walker, 26, of the 1400 block of Channing Court, was found along River Watch Parkway near Alexander Drive. She appeared to have been dragged there after being killed elsewhere.

May 10: The body of Thomas H. Cochran, 64, of the 3800 block of Wendell Street, was found near his bait and tackle shop in the 1600 block of Arthern Road. He died of a gunshot wound to his head, officials said. Police say he was killed May 9, possibly by people he was running off his property for illegal fishing or parking. Robbery did not appear to be a motive.

Sept. 4: Michael "Connie" Washington, 20, of the 200 block of Lamar Road, was shot as he walked away from an apartment at the Stonegate complex on Myrtle Drive.

Oct. 17: John Holliday, 68, of Florence Street, was found beaten to death in the 2200 block of Milledgeville Road. He was wearing only socks. His pickup truck was found several days later in the parking lot of Medical College of Georgia.


Feb. 3: The skeletal remains of Robert Sellars, 26, were found beside Lumpkin Road.

Aug. 1: Henry Sturgis, 42, was found shot on the railroad tracks at Wilkerson Road.

Sept. 13: Lawrence Barrett, 45, was shot in the back of the head as he returned home to the 2800 block of High Point Court.

Oct. 20: Alvin Harrington, 29, was found shot at Olive Road and Wharton Drive. The shooting is believed to be drug related.


Feb. 15: Norman Palmer III, 42, was found shot in the 3000 block of Old McDuffie Road. The shooting is believed to be drug related.

April 10: Leon Ellison, 17, was found shot in the 4400 block of Peach Orchard Road.

April 11: Karen Elizabeth Williams, 36, was found in the back seat of a car in the Daniel Village parking lot. Her body, with multiple stab wounds, had been wrapped in a blanket and bound with tape.

April 24: Lowell Marion Henry McCoy, 17, was found shot in the 2300 block of Cummings Road.

Sept. 10: Edward L. Taplin Jr., 36, was found shot in the 2400 block of Yates Drive.

Oct. 5: DeCarla Lashea Harris, 23, was found stabbed during an apparent robbery in Williamsburg Apartments.

Dec. 16: Ural Dion Beck Jr., 23, was found shot on Gravel Pit Road and New Savannah Road. The shooting is believed to be drug related.


Jan. 6: Barbara Chivers Lamb Deep, 44, was found dead of a gunshot wound during an apparent robbery in the 1500 block of Central Avenue.

Jan. 9: Melvin Thompson, 35, was found shot at Sunset Avenue and Luckey Street.

Feb. 13: Kent Johnson, 29, was found stabbed to death in a vacant lot on Hall Street.

June 8: Loretta Dukes, 24, was found shot to death in a field off Columbia Nitrogen Road.

July 23: Robert Donald Sellars, 26, was found on Lumpkin Road. The cause of death is unknown.

Aug. 27: Julian Hawes, 65, was shot to death inside his home in the 1800 block of Gordon Highway.

Nov. 30: Jimmy Harper, 62, was found shot to death in the 200 block of East Hancock Drive.


June 17: Michael Frails, 28, was found stabbed on Richmond Hill Road West. The stabbing is believed to have been drug related.

Aug. 1: Mary Lizzie Glenn, 69, was found stabbed to death in her 12th Street home.

Nov. 13: Richard Williams, 22, was found shot in the 2000 block of Old Savannah Road.

Nov. 25: William Bentley, 50, was found shot during an apparent robbery in the 300 block of Colorado Street.


Jan. 1: Margaret Pickett, 82, died about two weeks after she was assaulted and robbed in her Turpin Street home. She was taken to the hospital complaining of back pains and died there.

April 2: The partially nude body of Priscilla Wilson, 21, of the 1400 block of Wrightsboro Road, was found in a back yard on McCauley Street.

May 2: Josephine Delores Lawrence, 30, was found shot during an apparent robbery in the 600 block of Cedar Street.

June 26: Kevin Collette, 25, was found shot on U.S. Highway 1 near Fort Gordon. The shooting is believed to have been drug related.

July 9: Eddie Willie Bracy, 35, was found beaten in the 1400 block of Greene Street.

Sept. 1: Pam D. Hill, 22, was found shot in the 200 block of Magnolia Drive.

Sept. 6: Dimetria Smith, 3, died three weeks after her maternal grandmother took her to the emergency room to be treated for a blow to the head. The coroner ruled it a homicide. Her killer has not been found despite two grand juries and an indictment.

Sept. 17: Juanita Johnson, 80, was found bludgeoned to death in her Gordon Highway trailer home. She had been stabbed numerous times, and a plastic bag had been placed over her head.

Oct. 24: Ernest Turner, 61, was found shot in the 1400 block of Roulette Lane.

Oct. 27: Alvin Howard, 19, was found shot on Sand Bar Ferry Road.

Nov. 26: Matthew Martin, 61, was found shot during an apparent robbery in the 1400 block of O'Keefe Lane.

Dec. 27: Thelma Hankins, 69, was found strangled during an apparent robbery in the 900 block of Seventh Street


Aug. 19: Ray Holmes, 17, of Colonial Drive in Martinez, was shot in the chest as he sat with his girlfriend in a parked pickup truck off Willis Foreman Road.

Dec. 3: Margaree Bridges, 26, of Ellis St., was strangled in her home. In 1992, a jury acquitted Garry Deyon Johnson, 29, of the murder. On Tuesday, a Burke County Superior Court jury voted to send Mr. Johnson, 37, to prison for a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the Dec. 27, 1997 slaying of Irene Shields, 31. Mr. Johnson killed Ms. Shields by running over her repeatedly with a Ford Explorer.


Sept. 17: Youssef "Joseph" Mouna was killed in the parking lot of Humana Hospital (now Doctors Hospital) as he sat in his Mercedes-Benz. The native of Syria was shot in the face with a .38-caliber handgun.


Dec. 20: Just after 3 a.m., firefighters arrived at 805 Heard Ave. to find the residence of Cynthia Jo Wozneski, 31, fully ablaze with her charred body inside. Although it was initially labeled an accidental fire death, medical evidence later showed she died before fire consumed her body.


Feb. 14: Barbara S. Jefferson, 43, was stabbed 32 times on Valentine's Day in her residence in south Richmond County. Her body was found in a bathroom wrapped in a blanket, near a bathtub filled with water. Police said she was killed in a nearby bedroom.

May 27: Betty Jo Lackey, 35, was shot to death in her T-shirt shop on Wrightsboro Road, BY Designs. The apparent motive was robbery.

Dec. 17: Stephanie Denise Sullivan, 19, was found dead in her residence on Strother Drive in Augusta. She had been cut and stabbed 47 times.


Aug. 9: The body of Nancy Hopson, 35, of Beech Island, was found in the trunk of her car parked at Daniel Village. Three days later, her missing purse turned up in a mailbox off Walton Way.


June 17: The body of Carol Denise Gregg, 24, was found by her boyfriend, Grady Abrams, in her residence on Ruby Drive. At a coroner's inquest Aug. 20, it was determined that she had died by strangulation June 15 or 16.

Aiken County2000

Oct. 6: An Aiken County school bus driver discovered the body of Jason Bernard Cook, 18, of West Columbia, S.C., lying beside Horseshoe Bend Road near South Carolina Highway 19. He had been shot. His burned car was found several miles away.


Feb. 28: Oswald Strachan, 34, was found shot to death near Bettis Academy and Fields Cemetery roads in north Aiken County by a group of horseback riders. Mr. Strachan, a native of the Bahamas, had lived at several locations in the United States.

June 21: Augusta Sam's Club Manager David Holt's burned remains were found in the trunk of his Mazda Protege, parked off Sand Pit Road in Aiken County, just across from downtown Augusta. Police said they believe someone forced Mr. Holt to unlock the store on Bobby Jones Expressway and the safe before they killed him.

Oct. 9: Langley store owner Jim Ivey, 71, and a customer were looking at a stereo at Jim's Used Furniture on U.S. Highway 1 when a man entered the store, pushed the customer aside and beat Mr. Ivey with his fists. The man pulled a knife and stabbed Mr. Ivey several times. He died before noon that day.


Nov. 23: Janice Mixson Wessinger, 47, was found stabbed to death Nov. 23 in a wooded area near her Kedron Church road home by two deacons of her church as they helped in a search for the missing woman. Relatives reported she went for an early-morning job the day before.


April 2: Paul Edward Griffin, 58, was found beaten to death in the 100 block of Eula Helen Street.


July 31: Lawrence Cornell Breaker, 21, was shot outside the Baby Grand Club on Jack Jones Street.

Nov. 10: Dianne Boatwright, 48, and Glenn Boatwright, 43, were found floating on the South Fork of the Edisto River near the Rock Springs Boat Landing on New Holland Road. They had been shot.


Jan. 25: The skeletal remains of an unidentified black female in her 20s were found in a wooded area off South Carolina Highway 191, near Shaws Creek and the Edgefield County line. The cause of death was undetermined. The remains of another woman had been found in the area two years earlier.

July 29: Mary Fields, 51, of the College Acres neighborhood, was found beaten to death in a shallow grave in a field in Montmorenci. Byron Barnes, a neighbor, was arrested and charged with murder. However, he was never indicted and charges were dropped for lack of evidence in 1997.


Nov. 16: Risteen Durden, age unknown, was found shot in a wooded area of Uncle Duck Road.


March 22: The skeletal remains of Jackie Council, an Asian-American Indian, were found in a wooded area off South Carolina Highway 191 near Shaws Creek and the Edgefield County line. An autopsy showed Ms. Council had died two to five years before. She was identified by forensic photo overlay.


Jan. 19: Mattie Butler was found shot in the head in her home.

March 27: The body of Joanne S. Brooks, aka Pamela Simmons, was found off Thomas Road and Avalon Drive in Clearwater. She was identified from dental records in April 1993.


June 23: Rebecca Shores, 21, was four months pregnant when she disappeared from her home. A dog found her skeletal remains in a shallow grave near her residence on Pine Log Road.


Feb. 6: The body of Carolyn D. Evans was found in a wooded area behind Revco Warehouse in North Augusta.

Aug. 18: Wendell Gilbert was shot to death in the New Hope area.


May 5: Dorothy Mixon was found shot to death in the swimming pool of her Beech Island home.

Nov. 16: The skeletal remains of an unidentified black woman were found in a wooded area off South Carolina Highway 191 near Shaws Creek and the Edgefield County line.

Nov. 27: Jimmy Lee Purvis was shot to death at his home in Jackson.

Dec. 28: The skeletal remains of an unidentified black man were found in a wooded area off Old Kimble Road near U.S. Highway 1 and I-20.


Jan. 15: Tammy Lynn Thomas was found dead off South Carolina Highway 39 at I-20.


Nov. 23: Virginia Brackett was found dead in her home.

Dec. 1: Larry D. Huff was found shot to death off Storm Branch Road.


Jan. 19: Ollie Sapp was found shot and burned in his home at Route 1 in Williston.

May 8: Elbert Sanders was found shot to death in a wooded area of New Holland.

Dec. 12: Linda Bradberry, 35, was found on her hands and knees on the front floor of her AMC Pacer, dead from a close-range shotgun blast to the back of the head.


December: Anthony Oliver was found in the trunk of a burned car in Bath.


June 13: James McKie, 83, was found dead in his home in the 600 block of Carver Terrace in Aiken.

Aug. 4: Jessica Lynn Carpenter, 17, was killed at her Brentwood Place home in Crosland Park in Aiken. Her mother returned home at about 6 p.m. and discovered her daughter's body. An autopsy showed the teen died from internal bleeding and lack of oxygen.

Sept. 4: Timothy Colyer , 34, was found by a couple on all-terrain vehicles in woods near Old Sudlow Lake Road in North Augusta.


Oct. 4: Christopher Pollin, 20, of the 100 block of Chesterfield Street, was shot to the head in the Jewish Cemetery adjacent to Bethany Cemetery on Hampton Avenue. He died at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.


Jan. 3: Dewey "Red" Johnson, 68, was found beaten to death at his grocery store in the 300 block of Morgan Street.

North Augusta2000

Sept. 18: Clifford Wayne Williams, 48, was shot and killed at the Highlander Pub on Georgia Avenue by a man with whom he had been drinking beer. Witnesses said the two men argued and the other man stood up and shot Mr. Williams in the chest with a revolver.


Jan. 27: Leroy "Leo" Roosevelt McCoy, 28, and Joseph Nathan Tillman, 28, were found shot in the 600 block of Boylan Street.


Oct. 30: Gloria Ann Dickinson, 44, was found strangled in Room 11 of the Downtown Motel in the 100 block of Georgia Avenue.


May 9: G.C. Sailors and his wife, Gwendolyn, were shot to death in a corner bedroom of their Tamarack Drive home near North Augusta. Mrs. Sailors managed a Broad Street variety store. Her husband was a Savannah River Plant employee. Each was shot four times.

Columbia County1996

May 4: 45-year-old Patricia Ann Moore LaBran's battered, bloody body was found along Old Blythe Road near Harlem. She died from a massive blow to the head.


Sept. 27: Faxton Lamar Powell Jr., 29, was found lying beside Wrightsboro Road near Pumpkin Center with a .45-caliber gunshot would to his abdomen. No weapon was found.


Dec. 31: Wanda H. Huggins, 27, of Newborn, Ga., was found just south of Pollards Corner on the side of Scott's Ferry Road with several small-caliber gunshot wounds to the head.

March 17: Becky Annette Minish, 19, of Evans, has been missing since St. Patrick's Day 1987. Her car was found abandoned and damaged days later on Bobby Jones Expressway. Officially, she is considered a missing person, but investigators said she is presumed to be dead.


June 28: H. "Monty" McAvoy was found in his mobile home at Thurmond Lake with a gunshot to the back of his head. Police found $300 in his wallet and ruled out robbery. There were suspects, but no one was charged.


Oct. 8: Craig Fallaw, 34, was shot in the face with a .38-caliber pistol while he worked as a security guard at West Lake subdivision. A murder weapon was found in 1982, but no link to an assailant was ever made.
