Hornets' quarterback: Ready, winning and able

Corey Ready's numbers aren't gaudy, but they don't have to be. Surrounded by plenty of talented players, the Aiken High quarterback often is overlooked.

But this past Friday night, the senior lifted the Hornets to a 16-9 victory against Lancaster in the opening round of the Class AAAA Division II playoffs.

With Aiken holding a 3-0 lead, Ready turned the game in his team's favor with one play late in the first half. Trapped inside the 10-yard line, Ready rolled out to his right and appeared to be stopped by the Bruins' defense. But he shrugged off a pair of tackles, turned the corner and sped down the sideline for a 91-yard touchdown.

Ready, who finished with 147 yards on 17 carries, added a 6-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Through the air, Ready completed 3 of 8 passes for 59 yards with no interceptions.

Under Ready's guidance a year ago, the Hornets reached the state championship game before losing to Greenwood. Now, he has the Hornets 11-1 and in position for another trip to the title game.
